The Montreal Morgentaler Clinic is the first freestanding clinic to offer safe abortion services in Canada. It was established when Dr. Morgentaler, as an activist with Canadian humanist associations, began protesting Canada’s restrictive laws. He continued performing abortions after the law was changed in 1969 in response to women’s requests for safe and professional medical abortion care without having to go before a hospital therapeutic abortion committee. The clinic was situated for many years in a house in the east end of Montreal where Dr. Morgentaler had established a family medicine practice in 1955.
